Running for the Prize

1 Corinthians 9: 24-27 – “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”(NIV)

No one runs a race in anticipation of being disqualified or not finishing but to win the race. If you run you want to have goals in mind whether it be to win the race, first place in your age division, beat your best time or just simply to finish the race.

2 Timothy 2: 5 – “..if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor’s crown unless he competes according to the rules.” (NIV)

Rules ~ even running has rules. I don’t know what they are since I am not a runner. But, I would assume they are somewhere along the lines of don’t trip anyone, stay on course and don’t cheat. These are actually fairly good rules for running the race of life.

The race course for believers was laid out before the beginning of time. When you accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior your number one goal in life has been met. The race is won when we step through the gates of Heaven and begin our eternal life.

When you run through the gates of Heaven your victor’s crown is waiting not at the finish line but and the starting line of eternity.
