Who Am I

Who Am I

Who Am I?     Have you ever thought about who you really are? Well, I am one those people who comes up with these strange questions. When my dad was about to walk me down the aisle to give me away to a man he hardly knew, he leaned over and said very quietly, “Don’t forget to be you.” It took me several years to determine exactly what he meant by the statement. But somewhere along the years I knew the answer. When I was a child I was Jess and Juanita’s daughter, Butch’s sister, Robert and …

I Am a Temple of the Lord

I Am a Temple of the Lord

I am a temple of the Lord     1 Corinthians 3: 16 – “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you…..for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.”   When I stop to think “I am a temple of the Lord” I always stand in awe and almost unbelief that the Lord trusts me with his Holy Spirit and that spirit is within me. One of my fellow writers at My Journey of Faith, Doris Lisemby, sent me an encouragement email last year. I will never forget …

I Am Not My Own

I Am Not My Own

I Am Not My Own   1 Corinthians 6: 19 and 20 – “You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.” Jesus paid the ultimate price for us when he died on the cross in our place. He owns us, therefore, when we are faced with a compromising decision we should always think twice, count to 10, run or whatever else and stop before we do something that is not holy. If Jesus was viewable with your human eye would you do something to bring tears to his …

I Am Part of the Body of Christ

I Am Part of the Body of Christ

I Am a Part of the Body of Christ   1 Corinthians 12:  27 – 31 – “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having the gift of healing, others, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have the gift …

I Am an Over Comer

I Am an Over Comer

I Am An Over Comer     1 John 4: 4, 16 – “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them; because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of Go, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.” Through Jesus Christ we are over comers not only of the adversary but sin itself. We live in a fallen world and sin is rampant. We encounter …

God Gave Me a Spirit of Holy Boldness

God Gave Me a Spirit of Holy Boldness

God Gave Me a Spirit of Holy Boldness     2 Timothy 1: 7-9 – “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel by the power of God who has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done. But because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us …

Running with God’s Plan for My Life

Running with God’s Plan for My Life

Galatians 5: 7 – You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth? (NIV)   I am sitting on the porch this morning trying to soak up all that God is trying to show me through His word. Last year I participated in Phyllis Shirer’s study of Jonah. The memories of this study came back to me this morning when I began thinking about the times in my life when I became frustrated because God interrupted my life. I personally thought everything was going just fine and I had a handle …

Running to His Arms

Running to His Arms

Galatians 2: 2 – I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preached among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders; for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain.” (NIV)   One of the greatest joys of being the parent of a child comes at the end of the day when you walk into the rooms and you hear “mommy” or “daddy” and that bundle of endless energy comes running toward you with a smile on their face and arms wide …

Running for a Cause

Running for a Cause

Hebrews 12: 1 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” (NIV)   Why people want to get out of bed at the crack of dawn and run is a foreign concept to me. I cannot understand why anyone would leave a warm bed just to go out in the rain or cold to run five miles. To go to a good estate sale – well we all have …

Running for the Prize

Running for the Prize

1 Corinthians 9: 24-27 – “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have …

It’s Not Smart to Run from God

It’s Not Smart to Run from God

I love stories. Everything we do, see or experience is forever in our memory. The following story is one of those precious memories. One afternoon, I was spending some quality time with my two oldest grandsons. Chance was 5 and Boston was 2 ½ at the time. We were going to the park to play and as little boys of that age tend to do, they were getting restless during the drive to the park. My attempts to divert their attention were not being successful. I was running out of ideas when I asked if either of them wanted to …

Share Your Joy

Share Your Joy

Christmas is a time of great joy as we celebrate the greatest gift ever given. We see joy in the faces of children of all ages as they marvel at the lights and decorations. We also see the joy on Christmas morning as wishes and dreams are fulfilled. This past Friday evening I saw joy on the faces of several hundreds people who were attending the performance of The Singing Christmas Tree at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis. For a few short hours adults and children were taken back into time to meet a modern day Naomi and Ruth and …
