2 Corinthians 2: 14-16 “But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life…”
I am told by someone who has raised sheep that when a lamb is born, the fragrance of birth gives off a sweet aroma unlike any other animal birth. Each lamb has a unique smell. The mother ewe identifies her lamb by its smell and once that smell is identified, she will not accept another lamb as her own. She can even identify her own lamb from all others in a crowded flock by its smell.
The verses above speak of an aroma given off by Christians. Our Heavenly Father knows those who believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior because He can smell the aroma of Christ in them and He knows them even in a world of millions. Christians are the “pleasing aroma of Christ” to God the Father.
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere.”
“The aroma of the knowledge of Him” Christians are the aroma of Christ in this world because we have been given the knowledge of the good news of the gospel of salvation brought to us through the blood of Jesus. We are to share this knowledge with the lost world.
“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life.”
Both the lost and the saved can identify us by our fragrance as we share the gospel message and the way we live. Those who refuse the gospel message and the saving grace of Jesus are put off by the good news because of wickedness and sin (the aroma of death). To others we are the fragrance of life as we share the forgiveness of sin by the grace of God and as they accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.
How are you to become this special fragrant aroma? The only way to smell like Christ is to belong to Him. It is only through Him that you are saved into eternal life. Jesus desires a relationship with you. He desires for you to accept the sacrifice He made on the cross as He died for your sins. You must admit you are a sinner, repent of your sins, and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Then and only then will you have the fragrance of life-the aroma of Christ within you.
Do you belong to Jesus Christ and can you be identified as Christian by what you do and say? Do you give off the aroma of Jesus Christ?
