Don’t Turn Around

The Waters Are Parted by James Tissot

Exodus 14: 8  And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand.” (KJV)

Instead of “out with an high hand”, the Amplified says as they were leaving “confidently and defiantly”; the NKJV says they went out “with boldness”.  As they left Egypt, they were confident and unafraid.

When did the fear set in?  When they looked behind them and saw the enemy!  Just like us…we’re going along, bold in the Lord, on whatever course we’ve been directed, but when we look back and see the threat of our enemy, we become afraid!  Even though the same God who led us out of the last bout of slavery with that enemy is the same one who goes before us on the new path, the same one who saved us the last time!  It’s a cycle, and obviously, we’re all the same.  The only difference was that the Israelites had flesh and blood on their tails and we have evil spirits chasing after us.  Something we should remember is that, even though the Lord goes before us, He’s also behind us – just as He was when He closed the Red Sea and washed away the Egyptians!
