“This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and the One You have sent — Jesus Christ” (John 17: 3).
What comes to your mind when you think of eternal life? My mind immediately goes to life after death. I picture heaven, seeing Jesus face to face, and having no fear or sorrow. That is what eternal life has always meant to me.
But here, Jesus says that eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus. Thus, eternal life begins at the moment we turn to Jesus for our salvation because that’s when we begin to know God.
It’s hard to imagine that I am experiencing eternal life, right here and right now.
“For now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians 13: 12).
When we see Jesus face to face, we will know eternal life completely. Meanwhile, we don’t have to wait to experience it.
Eternal life isn’t a place; it’s a relationship. It doesn’t begin at our moment of physical death. As Christians, we know eternal life now. My desire is to know Him better, know Him more. By seeking Him to know him, I can experience eternal life right here, right now.
