Glimpses of His Magnificence

Day by Day Devotions

Deuteronomy 3:24 “O Sovereign LORD, You have begun to show to Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works You do?”

Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”

Sovereign: supreme in power or authority
Fear: profound reverence and awe toward God
(definitions from the Life Application Study Bible)

How powerful is your God?

Have you ever really thought about that question?

So often today, studies focus on God’s great love for us. And while that is an extraordinary thing, it’s leaving out an important part of the picture—we serve the Ultimate Power, the Creator who is above all else.

For a little bit of context, that verse in Deuteronomy is Moses speaking. This is the man who had spoken to a burning bush—and hear it speaking to him. He saw God bring the plagues to Egypt. He held his hand out over the Red Sea and watched as God parted the sea. He saw manna and quail cover the ground in the desert and water flow from a rock. In Exodus 33:11 we are told,

“The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.”
And with all of that—all he had seen and heard—Moses said, “You have begun to show to Your servant Your greatness” (emphasis mine). My hope is that this week will help us begin to see God’s greatness, and that we will be reminded why we revere God.
