Psalm 91: 4 “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (NKJV)
God will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Perhaps you and I have read the words shield and buckler, and know they are God’s protection; so that is sufficient for us. But what was the psalmist really promising? what is a buckler?
First let us consider this phrase: He will cover you with His pinions. But what are pinions? I had no idea, but found that pinions were eagle’s wings, and are said to be very strong. Therefore, the psalmist is promising that God will cover His children with His wings, and His faithfulness will be our shield and buckler. God knew during these evil days, that hawks would swoop down on His children and they would need a place of safety. I believe that God is using a mother bird to demonstrate His Fatherly protection over His children. And during the ministry of Jesus and people were rejecting Him and His message, He looked over the wicked city and said that he had wanted to gather them under his wing as a mother hen does her chicks, but they were not willing.
Believers wear a double armor: that of a shield and a buckler, or coat of male, which was a protective outer garment made of linked metal or rings or male overlapping metal plates.
Heavenly Father, Christians will face many snares of Satan, but with all the above protection we are safe. We may receive some scars of battle, but one day we shall forever be safely home with You. And as always, we should thank You in the name of Jesus who made our blessings possible. Amen.
