God promises a King – a Redeemer

Jesus Teaches Disciples by James Tissot

Psalm 118:1  “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever.” (CSB)

One of my favorite verses is found in Psalm 118.  I’m sure it is very familiar to you also.

Psalm 118:24 “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Following on down, just a few verses, we find vs. 26 -“He who comes in the name of the Lord is blessed.”  Let’s discover an Old Testament connection with the New Testament!

In Matthew 21, we find the event we call the triumphal entry of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem or Palm Sunday.  Jesus enters the city to the crowd shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Even though the people were looking for a king with an earthly kingdom, Jesus was the promised Redeemer King who came to save all from their sins and provide a way for eternal life with him in his heavenly kingdom.

Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promise to King David in II Samuel 7:16, “Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever, and your throne will be established forever.”

Then later in the Book of Acts, Paul makes it clear.  ”… God raised up David as their king … from this man’s descendants, as he promised, God brought to Israel the Savior, Jesus.” (Acts 13:22-23)

Celebrate Jesus – God’s Promised King!  His faithful love endures forever!

II Cor. 1:20  “For every one of God’s promises is “Yes” in Jesus!”
