He Is Our Refuge

Day by Day Devotions

DAY THREE:

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28-30

That is what depression feels like to me.  It is a heavy burden.  All I want is some relief, some rest.  I would like for someone to help me carry the load and that is what He says He will do.  His yoke is easy and His burden is light.  If we give it to Him, we will find rest.

On my good days, I feel as light as a feather and I marvel at how easy life is…even when it is not.  On my good days, I recognize my humanity and that I am not in control of anything.  I give it all to Him and trust that He will take care of it.  I trust that He will equip me for whatever comes my way.  “If our God is for us, who can be against us?”  Romans 8:31 That sounds like a superhero cheer similar to Mighty Mouse’s, “Here I come to save the day.”  If our God is for us, who can be against us?!?  He’s got this!

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from Him.  He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.  On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.  Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”  Psalm 62:5-8  Meriam Webster defines refuge as “a shelter or protection from danger or distress.”  He is our refuge.  He protects us not only from danger, but from distress.  He is there when we are overwhelmed with the darkness of this life.  We shall not be shaken, because we rely on Him for our salvation.  Let’s rest in that and remember that we will not be shaken, because He cannot be shaken.
