1 Corinthians 12: 27 – 31 – “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having the gift of healing, others, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have the gift of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts.”
When I read this passage I often think of the old saying “Too many chiefs and not enough Indians”. As believers we are all part of the Church of Jesus Christ and all believers have been given spiritual gifts. These gifts are to be used to further the kingdom and church.
We may want to be a teacher but if that is not your gift you will be miserable trying to become a teacher. And you will probably make some people you are trying to teach miserable along the way.
All believers have a gift. If you don’t know what your gift is, ask your pastor to give you a ‘Gift Test’. Do I have a spiritual gift, yes. My gift is administration and my least gift is mercy. I wish I had more mercy but God did not make me that way.
It takes all of the gifts of all of God’s people working together to make a church successful. Find out exactly what your part is to be within the church and get busy doing God’s work.
Jesus, thank you for not making us all alike. The world would be unruly if we all wanted to do teachers or prophets. Help me to rejoice and learn from those with the gifts that I do not have. We are all working toward the same goal just in different ways.
