What does it mean to be in Christ? 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us that, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” The Greek word for the phrase ‘be in’ is enand denotes position. It is in essence letting us know the position of the person. A person can either be in Christ or outside of Christ. Being in Christ means that we are included within, that Christ possesses us (we are no longer our own), we belong to Him, and we understand that we originate in Him. If we are in Christ, we are a new creation. The wording in Greek tells us that if we are positioned in Christ, we become a new or fresh and original creation.
We have chickens here on the farm. The kids get so excited when the eggs which a hen has been sitting on begin to hatch. We get to watch as a new life emerges from the shell. This chick is a fresh and original creation. When a person moves from being outside of Christ to being in Christ, the same thing happens. It is as if they are being born all over again. John chapter 3 terms this as the second birth. Being in Christ changes everything for us. It brings freshness, newness, a different perspective, and a changed heart. It is an absolute wonder to watch a chick coming forth from the shell. It is also an absolute wonder to have the privilege to watch a person move from being out of Christ to being in Christ.
Father, please help us to remember when we moved from being out of Christ to being in Christ. Renew the wonder at such an incredible thing. Cause us to recall how much being in Christ changed our lives. Give us eyes of wonder as we look around us at those who are in the process of moving from being outside of You to being in You. We understand that we will continue to move further into You. Continue to bring us in deeper and deeper. Thank You that we can be in Christ…and that being in Christ changes everything for us! In the name of our Jesus we ask this, amen.
