I remember how important it was to have the same kind of clothes everyone else had. As I looked at a 50’s photo this morning I see a row of girls sitting with their feet crossed. Every one of them had saddle shoes and white socks. I remember those days. I remember that not every girl in class had what everyone else had. Back in my pre teen years we all wanted to look like Twiggy. She was known for her waiflike look consisting of skinny build, large eyes, long eyelashes, and short hair. Try as we might, not all of us could pull that look off.
Each one of us is different. We don’t have the same family, same ancestral genes or the same build, hair color or eyes. We can do a lot to increase our “face value”, but realistically we’re just all trying to fit in. If we concentrate on trying to look like everyone else, we will be abject failures at some point. Why would God make us all so different if we’re supposed to fit in?
Oh beloved, you weren’t made to fit in. You were made to stand out! You were created to live a life that is pleasing to God and that radiates the beauty of God. You’ve become a mirror for the Christ who saved you. Reflecting His image is your job now. And that’s why you must allow yourself to stand out. Sure you can enjoy the day’s fashions, but even when it’s not fashionable you can proclaim the glory of the Lord in your life. One touch from the Lord changes your wardrobe, giving you stability, confidence, poise as well as love, joy peace, kindness gentleness and self control. It’s true that fitting in with Jesus will give you the best look ever.
God loves you and He’s for you. Learn to stand out in full regalia of all Christ is to you and all He has done for you. You’ll draw a crowd like a moth to a flame. There may be some who are repelled by Christ in you, but keep standing out. Those who come to you for the confidence you have are sent by God to receive what you have received through Christ. Let Him use you to share with others how to quit worrying about fitting in with anything but Kingdom living.
Romans [8:29] “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren.”
