Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and carriage! That old song made famous by Frank Sinatra and satirized by Al Bundy on “Married with Children” comes to my mind. We have just celebrated the love holiday all across the country. And yet, the wide chasm between crooner Frank and the shoe salesman is a good representation of how it is in the world. Women want to be sung to by Frank but many are left holding the bag for Al, the down and out man of the house. Love and marriage truly do go together, but the recipe for true love and real respect includes a third person. Without the influence of the Giver of Love we are all in the Klink relationship-wise.
Marriage was meant to be entered into with love as the first calling, priority and reason. Yet after the “I Do’s”, it’s a dog eat dog world. Kids are born, bills need paying, life gets ugly and Frank Sinatra fades into oblivion as couples find themselves not too unlike Ted and Kelly Bundy. How did they get there? Or were they always there?
Even if you never have included the Third One into your life and marriage, you can start today! The Lord is quick to enter into covenant with us and will make our lives full of His love. Agape love will then stretch out beyond ourselves and into our marriages. I am living proof. My husband and I were married and I wasn’t even a Christian, not really. I knew about Jesus, but I had not met Him personally. After finding Christ and becoming a completely committed follower of Him everything changed. The way I loved even changed. No longer was I looking for love for myself, I was looking for ways to love others through Jesus. My husband loved the new wife I became.
Oh beloved, love and marriage goes together best when Christ is the glue that cements it all together. Rejoice in your faith, remember your birthright as a child of God and rehearse the marriage blessings you have because of Him. Even the marriage with trials and problems can grow stronger when you look to Jesus for all your needs.
God loves you and He’s for you and that, precious one, is all that really matters. God bless you and keep your marriage tightly knit with Him all the days of your life and may He grant your love and marriage to go together like a horse and carriage in Spirit and in Truth!
I John 4: 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
John 4: 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
I Corinthians 13: 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
