Modern Day Idol Worship

Lawyer Tempts Jesus By James Tissot

Currently, should we ask people we know if they worship idols? Most would say they don’t. However, after reading Jesus’ answer to a lawyer who asked Jesus, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus gave him this answer,

Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”  Matthew 22: 36-37

Times have changed, but not man’s ego. Most won’t admit it, but many centuries later, man still is consumed with his personal life and desires. You and I buy food and let some go to waste while many people die of starvation. I dare say I’m not the only one guilty of this, but I have far more clothes hanging in my closet than any woman needs. I believe we should dress appropriately for work and special events, but most of us need to downsize our clothes closet and share contents with the less fortunate.

God wants us to have food, clothing, and shelter, the basics of life, but we are not to allow the possession of them to consume us. Materialism is probably one of our modern-day idols. We may not want to admit it, but aren’t many of us are like the rich man whom God called a fool and required his life that night?

Heavenly Father, forgive us who don’t always put You first in our lives. We confess our sin and ask Your forgiveness in Jesus’ name. Amen.
