Pesky mosquitoes, ants and flies…
Sunshine and pleasant temperatures are ever so encouraging to spend more time outside. Add in the time change giving us that extra hour of daylight and you have yourself a deal!
I spend a lot of time outside with my two Dobermans, my Man and my Daddy. We enjoy fishing and riding around in the boat. Sometimes we like to stop and eat lunch at the picnic table or even on the boat. One thing is certain, the flies will find you. Drop one minuscule crumb and you have an immediate ant population trying to take every food item you brought. So you begin doing battle with these insurgents and it seems to be never ending. Finally you have no choice but to fire up the motor and get that boat moving. It doesn’t take long and things are back to being enjoyable. You progress through the day and as evening comes you wait for that beautiful view of the sunset over the water. Nothing to me is more beautiful. As you enjoy God’s artwork you snap a few pictures. Trying to get that perfect shot. That post card perfection. And you might have a chance if it weren’t for those pesky mosquitoes. It doesn’t seem to matter where we go they are there. We swat, slap and spin trying to avoid their painful bite. Their intent is to feast on our blood so they can thrive. Our intent is to avoid them like the plague, flatten them, and stop their aerial assault.
And this is how I think of Satan… pesky. Satan is like a fly, an ant or mosquito. Always looking for a host. Job 2: 2 “And the Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”
He wants to take what you have just like the ants do. He wants to drain you like mosquitoes do. He wants to annoy you like the flies do. John 10: 10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
He is constantly hissing in our ear filling us with doubt even when we know God’s word. Genesis 3: 1 [ The Fall ] “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
Genesis 3: 2 “The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,”
Genesis 3: 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.”
Satan is so sneaky sometimes we mistakenly let him in. 2 Corinthians 11: 14 “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”
We cannot think for a moment that we are so well into our walk with the Lord that he won’t try to tempt us. Satan tempted Jesus for crying out loud! Matthew 4: 1 [ Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness ] “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.) Once Jesus was tempted for 40 days.” Luke 4: 2 “where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.”
So when we are riding that pity train because Satan won’t ease up, remember that Jesus too endured these things. There is a way to fight Satan and God makes sure we know how by giving us directions in His word. Ephesians 4: 27 “and do not give the devil a foothold” Ephesians 6: 11 “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” And never forget that the bible tells us plainly in Romans 16: 20 “The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.”
So don’t let the pesky things of life keep you from enjoying all of God’s gifts. Just suit up in His armor and carpe diem. (Seize the day).
