Saying in Secret

Saying in Secret

Even what we say in secret might return to haunt us.  This entry comes close to home with me.  For after reading this Psalm reminder, I was nailed.

Psalm 101: 5 “Whoever slanders their neighbor in secret, I will put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, I will not tolerate.” (NIV)

Note how David combines what we say in secret with pride and haughtiness.  it’s Pretty ugly, don’t you think?  I found myself doing this very thing, boy, did God shut my mouth!  Literally, since for a couple weeks I’ve been battling hoarseness, but when it started, I couldn’t talk above a whisper.  Allergies or not, I think God was teaching me a valuable lesson.  You may say things about someone in secret, when no one’s around, but He hears it all.

Of course, during my silent period, I had to confess it, and ask forgiveness.  Have you found yourself doing this recently?  Or, were there times in your past where you said the wrong thing?  Remember, words cannot be taken back.  Once their uttered, it’s over!

Lord, forgive us when we speak ill of someone.  The verse says “your neighbor”.  That could be anyone, known or unknown.  Cleanse our mouths, so that we might please You in what we say.  Thank You for Your Spirit who convicts and Your blood that cleanses.  We love You.  In Your Precious Name, I pray. Amen!
