His Rock, Your Wave

THE ROCK, His work is perfect; ALL HIS ways are entirely just. A faithful God, without prejudice, HE is righteous and true. (Deuteronomy 32: 4) Have you ever really examined a rock? I mean really examined it? Or even better, have you ever wondered why a rock is named a rock? Well, let us take a moment to get out of what we are thinking right now and shift to this topic for a few minutes. A rock is a solid mass that is formed by three different mechanisms but the running theme is that it is SOLID. …

Our Present Darkness

As I came into the dark bedroom one morning where the computer/office is now I noticed something in the chair. I reached out to touch it in the dark and it was a group of tiny stuffed animals all arranged just so. One of the grands had been playing in this room and the evidence sat mutely there. I laughed as I switched on the light and discovered which toys they were. Without the light I had no idea what it was. Oh beloved, God speaks to my heart. Sometimes we just have to reach out in the dark. We …

Steady As She Goes

God says I AM that I AM. I AM your Captain and I will navigate you safely to the yet unseen shore.   “Steady as she goes.” I hear these words as I get up this morning. So of course I look for the origin of the phrase and I find it quite interesting. Here is what I read: It is a instruction from the captain to the helmsman of a ship, to keep the ship heading steadily on the same course regardless of gusts of wind or cross-currents. And then I read these words: When in vicinity of the …

For Mine Eyes Have Seen

For mine eyes have seen… We have a daughter that is a glasses girl. It’s a big part of her physical feature and enhances her fun personality.  However, for the last several years, the prescription changes far faster than either the doctors or I can keep track. Time escaped and the prescription changed drastically. While driving home, she talked and talked about viewing details. And when I say details, for the first time, she realized trees had leaves high in the their tops. Sounds ridiculous, right. My daughter had been living her life not viewing the leaves in the tops …

Life’s Storms

The I 30 corridor…not a pleasant phrase when the storms are kicking through in East Texas. I watched them all day yesterday, first one tornado warning and then another. It was the positioning of the storms that gave me pause. So often in the past those East Texas storms would fly up the interstate and cause us problems in Arkansas. At one point I got a text from a precious cousin, whose daughter and husband were on their way to a storm shelter near Texarkana. We prayed together via text and asked God to watch over them. Finally, the storms …

Pray the Book

When looking over verses this week, it was a challenge to choose just one to unpack for a devotional. Instead, I opted to highlight three passages, and to suggest how to pray those verses back to God as you intercede for your precious ones: “My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you.” Proverbs 7: 1  “Lord, your word is life. I pray my children would not just memorize Your Word but would love it and live it. Give each of them an insatiable hunger and thirst for your truth that will never be satisfied this side of heaven. As they open …

Myth-Busters

Myth-busters How many wise men brought Baby Jesus gifts? If your answer was three, that would be consistent with tradition, but not The Bible. While the magi did bring three gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Matthew 2: 11), The Bible doesn’t actually say how many people were involved in delivering them. One thing I love and respect about my father and his preaching habits: he never expects anyone to take his word for anything he says, behind a pulpit or otherwise. Instead, he encourages his congregation, “Don’t take it from me; read it for yourself.” I suppose that’s one reason …

The Bible is Nonfiction

Myth or Real: The Bible is Nonfiction At the end of yesterday’s devotional, I referred to the scripture (Bible) as Truth. But is it? Most Christians believe it is. After all, The Bible says so. Using deductive reasoning, if the Bible is inspired by God (II Timothy 3: 16-17), and if God is Truth (Isaiah 65: 16; John 14: 6; John 16: 13); then The Bible must be true. “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy 2: 15 KJV) Therefore, we Christians, by …

Salvation is from Hell

Myth or Real: Salvation is from Hell When someone is “saved”, exactly what are they saved from? Every person’s salvation experience is unique, and I’m sure there are many deciding factors, but as a ten-year-old child, I wanted to be saved from Hell. “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Revelation 21: 8 INV) After a description like that, how could anyone not call to Jesus for salvation? If Hell …

Christians Shouldn’t Judge

Myth or Real: Christians Shouldn’t Judge I’ve heard viewpoints from both unbelievers and believers about whether Christians should judge others or not. Most unbelievers I’ve encountered feel that we Christians shouldn’t judge, using the first two words of Matthew 7: 1, “Judge not” to back their standing; while there have been ministers who’ve preached on how Christians should judge. So, which is correct? I believe it’s easier to understand when we separate the synonyms: judge and discern. The reason I say this is because as we’ve grown up in our society, we’ve always been taught, “Don’t judge a book …

Connect with God

Connection is a warm word. It draws us together. It says we belong. It is relationship with love as the glue. We need connection. So does God. He Loved First Genesis 1 tells of the world that God created.  He created people in His image. Then He loved us first, despite our sins (I John 4:19). While we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8), He gave His only Son as a blood sacrifice to pardon our sins and allow us entrance into heaven (John 3:16). Now, He is in heaven preparing a place for us to live forever (John 14:2). …
