Choices

After the 40 year reign of Solomon, the ten tribes of the North decided not to follow Rehoboam, Solomon’s successor.  For 210 years, the Northern Kingdom was led by 19 kings whose choices led to destruction in the end. These kings were just, upright, and followed straight paths after the Lord.  One of these kings was Asa, great, great grandson of King David. Kings were to be leaders on many fronts: politically, economically, militarily, and spiritually.  God expected both kings and people to be loyal to Him.  King David was the standard; he set the example of integrity and wholehearted commitment.  …

Making the Right Choices

In the Old Testament, we find instances where God’s people were asked to make choices. “Therefore, fear the Lord and worship him in sincerity and truth. Get rid of the gods your fathers worshiped and worship the Lord. Choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship – the gods your fathers worshiped in Egypt or the gods of the people in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the Lord.” Joshua 24:14-15 (CSB) What was the role of the Old Testament prophet?  Men like Elijah spoke for the Lord to His people.  He …

God Provides in Unexpected Ways

II Kings 7 includes a most unusual story concerning the citizens of the capital city, Samaria, in the Northern Kingdom.  The city has been under siege by the Arameans from Syria led by Ben Haddad II, and conditions are desperate.  It’s a dark picture of scarcity of food, inflation, starvation, cannabalism, and death. Elisha delivered the Word of the Lord promising that circumstances were about to change in 24 hours.  (From despair to hope, from scarcity to plenty) Choices:  The king’s right hand man expressed his mocking doubt upon hearing the prophecy.  Four lepers were witnesses of God’s deliverance – …

Choose to Pray

Choose to Pray (Examples of fervent, effective prayers found in I and II Kings – Old Testament) In I Kings 8, in Solomon’s Prayer when dedicating the Temple of the Lord, he mentions several situations when people find themselves in need: 1) when someone wrongs another 2) when defeated in battle 3) when there has been no rain 4) when calamities and disaster strikes 5) when someone needs mercy 6) when people go into battle 7) when they sin against God 8) when they repent and return. Solomon continues by asking the Lord, “when they return to you with all …

Send Rain

“Then hear Thou in heaven and forgive the sin of Thy servants and of Thy people Israel, indeed, teach them the good way in which they should walk. And send rain on Thy land, which Thou hast given Thy people for an inheritance.” 1 Kings 8:36 Do you speak & encourage others to pass on the inheritance of the Lord?  The next generation must know of the Lord just like Israel passed on their inheritance to the next generation. Teach one another of the Lord Jesus. Tanya Jackson

The Joy of Renewal

Psalms 118:24 “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”   The first spring after my husband’s passing brought fresh reminders of my loss. His favorite past times were all around me. When our sons were young, Ken was a soccer coach. He embraced the game fully in spite of having never played it himself. When our grandchildren came along, he enjoyed the comfort of the sidelines as he watched our younger son coach his boys. Ken also loved baseball and was a pitcher for his high school team. …

Will You Trust His Perfect Timing

Ecclesiastes 8:6 (ESV) “For there is a time and a way for everything, Although man’s trouble lies heavy on him.” Surprisingly the first backup camera was used in 1956 on a Buick concept car and it wasn’t until 2014 the US Department of Transportation announced the camera requirement for new cars.  This technology made it easier for drivers to have wider views and see rear images clearly, which assisted drivers maneuvering their cars in a safer manner. As in life, clarity often comes when looking back through the rear-view camera or mirror.  Living with a  mental health diagnosis and …

Big Wave and Bigger Love

Scripture: Psalms 107:1 – “Give thanks to the Lord; for he is good. His steadfast love endures forever”   Message: The same song of which the Israelites sang before they saw victory over their enemy is pictured within the Psalms (107, 118, and 136). Which for a side note; the book of Psalms has literally been a lifeline to me along the grief journey. The rays of emotions are noteworthy especially to anyone struggling. But within this particular Psalm one can gather that no one and no circumstance is too far out of God’s reach. There are about 6 different examples of people who have …

Pray Like You Know God Will Answer You!

Are you praying to God as if you know Him, or are you just throwing up some requests, not expecting much? If you want specific answers to prayer, make specific requests. Nehemiah 1: 8-9 – “Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell …
