Be The One

Standing in the crowd of third graders, I was shorter than anyone but I was fast. Two of my classmates had been chosen to be team captains and now they were choosing their friends, the athletes and the popular kids. I desperately hoped they chose me. I wanted to be the one. Mark 9:23, “All things are possible to the one who believes.” HCSB I still want to be the one. I want to be the one who believes. I want to be the one God uses, the one He chooses. God apparently doesn’t choose based on ability, looks or …

Battle Plan

About the same time I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, my friend was battling addiction. I sent her scriptures and stood in the gap and prayed, but it was too late. She was in a firestorm and under intense attack. Her only option was duck and cover. Life is a battlefield. If you are not armed, you will be harmed. Prepare in advance. 1 Peter 5:8, “Be serious! Be alert! Your adversary the Devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour.” HCSB Recognize the enemy of our soul is seeking to destroy us. He …

Clean Up That Spill

Remember the skeletal anatomy song? “The knee bone’s connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone’s connected to the foot bone…” In my case the foot bone is often connected to the mouth bone. My mind tends to race and my mouth tends to run. Unfortunately my filter malfunctions and words often spill out inappropriately. Calling me opinionated would be an understatement. Matthew 12:34, “For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.” HCSB As our beliefs affect our thoughts, our thoughts also affect our speech. Sometimes we treat the symptoms without dealing with the underlying cause. My mouth …

To Be Shared

Today’s writing is what I refer to as a soul searcher. I have been doing a lot of soul searching in the past year and this is one thing that the Lord has revealed to me. Am I Burdened for Others – A few years ago, my oldest son, Scott, came by for a few minutes. When he was leaving he asked if we could pick up the boys after school. I told him I was leading a Beth Moore Bible study for the next 10 weeks. He then looked at me and said something that has bothered me since …

In His Word

Have you ever thought about how a Bible verse becomes popular?  I Have.  Did you know that there are 23,145 verses in the Old Testament and 7,957 verses in the New Testament, making a grand total of 31,102 verses in the entire Bible?  Each is just as important as the next or God would not have included them in His book. Some verses are more popular than others i.e., John 3:16, Philippians 4:13, Genesis 1:1, I John 1:1 are just a few.  On occasion someone will make a t-shirt with a verse printed on the front or on the …

God Be Near

“God be Near” Simply three little words But O, the peace they bring Just to know He’s right beside me, And yesterday…today, and forever, He’ll always be the same. “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted…Psalm 34:18a (NASV) “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8a (KJV) I was in a Grief Support meeting after my mom passed away.  Our pastor closed with this prayer: “God Be Near”  Three little words.  They really spoke to me because they said so much in such a simple way. Sometimes we try to make things so complicated.  We …

God is Creator

God is Creator. This devotional on the attributes of God is a “quick-read” daily praise opportunity to extol and revere the Lord using words of adoration describing His nature and character with Scripture from the Kings James Version of the Bible unless otherwise mentioned. Day One God is Creator. Creator is the founder and life giver of all things nature of God. Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth,” John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with …

All Those Names

I’ve been reading through the historical books of the Old Testament- particularly Ezra and Nehemiah. I’ve noticed, as well in 1 and 2 Chronicles, there are a plethora of names. So many, that often they’re hard to pronounce. Most of the time, we’ll just skip over them, to save time and frustration. But when using a screen reader, I have to read all through them, since that’s the way it works. It reminded me of Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” Most of these names …

There’s a Whole Lot of Shakin’ Goin’ On!

“There’s A Whole Lot of  Shakin’ Goin’ On!” I borrowed  my  title from  a Jerry  Lee Lewis, hit from the 50s, describing the latest dance craze. But, in: Psalm 29:8, “The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.“ The Lord’s voice is shaking up the Kadesh Desert. A couple of other translations use the words, “trembles,” or “quakes.”  Sounds like an earthquake to me, doesn’t it to you? While I’ve been pondering these devotional entries, I’ve noticed that these words used are ones we’re so familiar with i.e. the weather. Earthquakes, cyclones, hurricanes, …

Can God Be Trusted

Can God Be Trusted? Studies one summer took me to Joshua to prepare for Sunday School lessons and to Daniel to prepare for VBS.  What do these Old Testament Bible characters have in common? Previously, we have been looking at the story of Joshua; now, let’s jump over to the book of Daniel. We first meet Daniel and his friends marching off to Babylon as captives.  Moving to Babylon was certainly unexpected!  This wasn’t in their plans; not how they expected their lives to turn out. Here are these Jewish boys from Jerusalem taken away from their homes and …

Valuable Lesson Found in the Summer Rest

Mark 6:31 “And he said unto them, come ye yourselves apart*into a desert place, and rest awhile: for there were many coming and going and they had no leisure so much as to eat.” Summer time for a teacher is thought to be a time of rest.  Rest from lesson plans, state requirements, students who depend on you, team meetings, workshops or staff development, parent/teacher conferences, to name a few. While summer can be just that, it can also be costly.  When I think of summer I think of it as being a great time to gain back strength …

It’s Not What You Do, But Who You Become That Matters!

Somewhere during my journey with the Lord, I got it in my head that the things that I did would somehow validate me.  I went on a wild goose chase caught up in the “doing” and none of it seemed coherent.  These things had absolutely nothing to do with my purpose.  Though they were good things, they weren’t necessarily the things that God had for “me” to do.  I wanted the God-things! God things are those things that are unique to you and only you.  There is a gift that God has given each one of us that when …
