Vision is a Terrible Thing to Waste

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Proverbs 29:18 Perspective is a game-changer. Your spiritual vision is your perspective and it is based on the proximity of your relationship with God. Unlike natural vision, we choose life or death with our spiritual vision and we speak what we see accordingly. When you visit the eye doctor for your annual eye exam, there is a device that they use to measure your visual acuity.  When the eye doctor position the lens, they ask you if you see better with “1” or “2.”  Based on your response, the eye …

Knowing What You Believe

Scientists haven’t discovered a tool yet to see human beliefs.  It is actually not until we are faced with a situation that our belief systems are called to the forefront and our actions follow suit. I recall the season that I was discerning the voice of God telling me it was time to leave my job.  I distinctly remember trying to find an alternative to His command so “I” could suffice for the income that would be loss as a result of my leaving.  Yes, I was essentially trying to help God help me! And so …

Finding Peace

Writing down my faith story changed my life. The application process for seminary required that my husband Dan and I to write down our faith stories. I struggled with that assignment, even though I had attended church all my life. Baptism. I recalled a few details of my baptism experience. I pictured myself as a scrawny, nine-year-old tomboy with a long, brown ponytail, dressed in my Camp Fire uniform, sitting in church with my best friend, Bibbie. Our mothers had lined us up on the second row at church for Camp Fire Recognition Day. At the end of the sermon, Bibbie …

WordPower

I noticed a small typo within a comment that I had posted on a friend’s blog. Instead of the word “power,” I had typed “poser.” A minor mistake? Not for a writer! And especially not in this case! My tiny error distorted the entire significance of this scripture: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Cor. 4:7 NIV). One word shifted my focus and the potential attention of my readers. All I could see was my mistake. I lost sight of the message and …

The Ultimate Peace

All this week we have been looking at ways we can pursue peace instead of perfection. We’ve seen how procrastination and giving into the lies of the world holds us back from pursuing the peaceful life God intends for each of us. If I could sum up everything we’ve talked about this week in one thought, it would be this: We need more of the Bible and less of the world. Or, another way to say it would be, we need to leave Facebook behind and get into God’s book. My favorite Bible verse is found …

You Are Enough

The enemy would love us to believe that we are not enough. In fact, he uses the world to reinforce this lie on a daily basis. The truth is, in God’s eyes, you are enough. Just the fact that He created you says you have worth. I love how Psalm 139:16 talks about God having a purpose for each of us before we were even born. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. The world …

Expect His Movement

The first three times the answer was still the same but his master sent him again. Four, five and six.  He ran out to the overlook and yet the same thing…nothing was happening. You wonder if the servant thought his master had gotten it wrong.  It had not rained in years and the sky was void of clouds but now his master had said he heard the sound of abundance of rain. Once again for the seventh time, Elijah told his servant to go look toward the sea. This time something was different. There was a cloud as small as …

Confidence…Have Some

Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” (KJV) …”the called” – that’s us!), and Jeremiah 29:11 (“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (KJV)). These scripture verses are two of my anchor verses. Romans tells me that even the setbacks are going to produce something good, and Jeremiah, in the Amplified Version, tells me that His will for my life includes …

Burning Bones

Jeremiah 20:9  “…But His word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones…” I remember the first time I really related to that portion of the verse! I had been working on my ministry for a while, and there were all of these things just spilling out, and I just wanted to share what the Lord was saying and doing with everybody! It was such an exciting season! I spent every bit of my extra time working on this great task that I was honored to have been given! When you set out with God to …

Can You Get To the Phone? It’s God

A subject that has become near and dear to me is that of accomplishing God’s will for your life.  So many Christians live on this earth without ever realizing their instilled potential, something the Lord intended to be used as they carry out His work.  And, let me tell you, it takes a lot of faith (and patience!) to keep doing what needs to be done in order for His will to be fulfilled.  These devotions are coming directly from my own personal experience – just highly abridged – and I hope what I’ve learned can help some of you! …
