Peace That Passes Understanding

Peace that Passes Understanding     My father is a singing, guitar-playing pastor while my mother, brother, and I sing as well. I believe this exposure has led me to be very partial to music.  It’s enjoyable to read through the Bible and find scripture that so obviously inspired some of the songs and hymns I’ve heard throughout my life. When you were a child, did you ever sing or hear the song “I’ve got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy”?  While the catchy tune, suggesting the devil sit on a tack (Ouch!) was quite satisfying, I never understood …

Free Consent

Free Consent       When you’re an employer, one of the rights you are expected to give a potential employee is free consent.  Before the person accepts the job, they should know exactly what responsibilities they are taking, and the consequences.  For example, someone may not accept a position of night watchman if they know upfront the crime rate in the area they will be stationed is much higher than the place of application. Many people believe that because God is our comforter, once we submit ourselves to Him, our lives will be perfect.  Jesus gave full disclosure …

It’s All in the Details…or is it?

It’s All in the Details…or is it?     Not many people have a ton of money straight out of high school. Even with a full-time job, the pay was still very low. It always seemed like I never had money for anything. Then, the credit cards began to rack up. Finances are one of the most anxiety-inducing situations anyone will ever experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the frustration and fears of not knowing what it going to happen next. So, what does the Bible say about these scenarios and how can we feel the …

To Fear or Not to Fear

To Fear or Not to Fear     I frequently travel nationwide for business.  When I’m across country alone, I’m always watching over my shoulder, taking caution in my attire and body language, and making sure my hotel is located in a safe area.  It’s sad that the world has come to this, but a lone female must take extra safeguards in protecting herself. I’m sure I’m not the only woman to consider all the worst-case scenarios.  But when I do, I also contemplate my reactions.  I recall the lady in The War Room when she was about …

Surrender All

Surrender All     I’m a non-traditional college student, taking online classes, part-time while in my mid-thirties.  One semester, I took an Ethics course (probably not the first course a Christian would register for).  To my surprise, I wasn’t the only Bible-believer in the class.  Others, more courageous than I, spoke up in the discussion boards about their spiritual background and beliefs, which inspired me to do the same. In our final paper, we were to take a controversial subject previously studied in the course and give our opinion backed by moral thoughts and feelings.  Close to one-third …

Peace from the Shepherd

DAY THREE: ADVENT – Peace from the Shepherd “Daddy, I’m scared.” The father pulled the tiny balled-up fists from the child’s eyes and wrapped his strong hands around them. “I’m right here. Tell me why you’re frightened.” “I don’t know what’s going to happen.” “It’s going to be fine. I promise.” “But, how do you know?” “I know because I’ve already been there. Rest now.” Our family knows how the child felt. Four years ago, my grandson, Gage, was diagnosed with leukemia. The discovery came fast. In just a few days, Gage went from not feeling well to a trip …

Groanings Too Deep For Words

DAY TWO: There are days when I desperately cry out to the Lord.  Those times of desperation do not come with beautiful words or clever turns of phrases.  Sometimes, the only word I can say is “Jesus.”  My soul is overwhelmed and I am unable to articulate exactly how I feel. That is when I am most grateful for the assurances of Romans 8.  “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.  And He who searches hearts knows what …

The Ultimate Peace

All this week we have been looking at ways we can pursue peace instead of perfection. We’ve seen how procrastination and giving into the lies of the world holds us back from pursuing the peaceful life God intends for each of us. If I could sum up everything we’ve talked about this week in one thought, it would be this: We need more of the Bible and less of the world. Or, another way to say it would be, we need to leave Facebook behind and get into God’s book. My favorite Bible verse is found in Romans 5:1 “Therefore, …

Measuring Up

The enemy uses the world to tell us lies that keep us from living the life of peace God intends for us to live. These lies are used by the enemy to pull us down and keep us from experiencing the peace God has for us. One lie the world would have us to believe is You’ll Never Measure Up. This lie is all about comparing ourselves with others. Just like the magazine covers tell us we need to have the perfect home, perfect job, perfect body, and perfect relationships in order to measure up to the world’s standards. I …

The Trap of Procrastination

Let’s face it. There are many tasks that we just don’t want to do. We put them off as long as possible because they are things we have to do, not things we want to do. Procrastination keeps us from fully living the way God wants us to. I didn’t grow up with perfectionist tendencies. However, I did wonder why I always procrastinated doing certain things. I read the book Time Management from the Inside Out by Julie Morgenstern when I was trying to learn to manage my time better. This book was life changing for me because she talked …

Pursuing Peace

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I come that they may have life and have it abundantly.”( ESV) Have you ever been in the checkout line at the grocery store and looked through the magazines that are on display? Their covers promise us we will have an organized and clean home, be able to cook gourmet meals, lose weight without effort, and have wonderful relationships if we read their magazine. Oh, if only it were that easy! As women, we are hit with messages from the world that tell us we need to pursue …
