Pray with Purpose

James 5: 16 “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” Bible Verse for Meditation: James 5: 13-16   About one year ago, God began to nudge me to form an online prayer group. I was not sure why and did not feel qualified enough to organize it, but I did so after much hesitation. It started with five and then decreased to four around the fifth month, but then began to pick up great …

Bow and Arrow

In my late 30’s and 40’s, I was introduced to hunting. I tried various types of guns, but my weapon of choice was a compound bow and arrow. Although a little more challenging, it was fun to practice, trying to hit the bull’s eye. With a bow and arrow, you have to be patient, but purposeful, direct and confident. I’ve given up hunting, and to tell you the truth, the only way I could kill an animal is if I was hungry and needed to eat to survive. I relate the bow and arrow to my Christian walk. In order to …

Work While You Can

Some individuals must become unable to perform work before they really appreciate the blessing of being able to work. However, perhaps some who read this devotional are longing for retirement and restful days. But as one who took early retirement at almost sixty-two, my retirement days have been extremely busy years. But if physically well and mentally alert, most individuals have a choice: she can continue living and making a contribution to society, or she can piddle away her time while doing unimportant activities waiting for the death angel to come for her. That is not my desire; so allow me to close with this little poem: Let’s work today: for we …

The Hunt

While on the hunt for a particular item we wanted to buy, we found the cheap, the cute and the outrageously priced – all in the same item. We finally went to the standard mega store and found exactly what we wanted for much less. You’d suspect we sacrificed quality or style to save on the item. But no, actually the least expensive was also the best design and made of the most durable material. The hunt for fulfilment can cost much. And yet, even after spending all a person has, they can still come up with nothing they wanted. …

God’s Word

Yesterday two things happened to acquaintances that just floored me. One received a text meant for another person. It was rude and maligning about the person who received the text. Oh my. The other person was supposed to be on hold but it didn’t work, so they heard the diatribe about themselves over the phone line. Oh beloved, you are so special to the Lord. It might be that you’ve been through this type of situation. It could have been recently or on the playground or the party line many years ago. It still hurts. You may not have ever …

All Things Work Together for Good

“For we know that all things work together for good to those who love the Lord, to those who are called according to his purpose.”   This verse does not say all things are good; we know many things are not good: cancer causes deaths of individuals from infancy to old age, divorce has caused many children to be robbed of two loving parents, wars have caused the deaths of many brave soldiers. And with all the evils Satan stands by and claps with glee! Though all things are not good, God can take some things which in themselves are bad and combine them …

Reward of God’s Pruning

After saying all things work together for good to those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose, Paul added: “For those whom he foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.” Romans 8: 29a.     We are getting into some deep theology here, but in my words I believe this scripture means that in God’s foreknowledge He knew I would be saved, was aware of the years I would waste, but that I would become one of His children, and through the process of sanctification would become more like Jesus. Knowing that …

New Insight

Funny how finding an old journal written years ago brings back memories almost forgotten. Times of struggles and trials that brought me to where I am now were written down.  Journaling has been my habit over the years and has given encouragement to me through each step along the journey.  Why?  This was something I did for myself and God used journal writing to draw my soul and spirit closer to Himself. Someone once said “you can’t see the forest for the trees” meaning you only focus on one tree seeing only what is in front of you instead …
