Promotion

It’s the time of year when a group of people in my work organization apply for promotions in rank. It’s a daunting task because you really have to prove your worthiness on paper to merit this promotion. Not everyone who applies will get promoted. Still many will apply because of the increased benefits if the promotion comes through. Everyone who applies waits to see what their letter will say. Some are elated and others are disappointed. Oh beloved, God wants you to know this morning that in the world of faith it’s promotion time! Unlike this world’s plans, you don’t …

Pursuit

I grew up in a home where the world stopped for sports. It was tedious living during football especially. Men ate Thanksgiving dinner in front of that televised game. They pursued their teams with their whole hearts. It was all or nothing. God reminds me this morning that there are many pursuits that put joy in the hearts of people. None so much as pursuit of Him. Oh beloved, your Champion wants you to know this morning that He takes delight in having you on His team. He knows all the pursuits that call your name. He says there is …

Power

Storms rolled through our state recently. It reminds me that as a teenager we lived in a town where the electricity almost always went out when stormy weather came. My dad would use his huge flashlight (didn’t all dads have huge silver flashlights back then?) and mother would bring out the kerosene lanterns. We’d sit together in the darkened living room. Pretty soon we’d be singing old hymns and having wonderful conversations about life. By the time the lights would come back on we’d be sorry they did because it had been such an intimate wonderful time together. Oh beloved, …

Possible Out of Impossible

God loves impossible situations. My first experience with a computer was to have one put on my desk at a new job. I knew how to type and do basic office work but I had never used a computer. In order to be successful at this job I was going to have to do something I’d never done before. I didn’t run from the unknown, I just attempted to go forward. As God had opened the door I went through it. Scared, unsure and wondering I called upon the Holy Spirit to help me. It was an impossible situation, but …

Worn Out Getting Ready for the Day? Rest in Him!

Wow, just a few more days till Christmas!  If you’re like me, there are still quite a few things to do to get ready for the day.  I keep thinking I need to add an arrangement to a table, an ornament to the tree, a package underneath or another string of lights outside.  Most of us, if truth be told, have lots more Christmas ideas than days left to accomplish them!  I find that right about now, I begin to lose ground between my ideas and plans and daylight hours. I also find that I am getting tired.  It’s a …

Let All the Boxes Be Emptied!

I got a text from our oldest daughter last night. She had three more boxes of Christmas decorations to put out around her house. She said “if it doesn’t get put out tonight, it’s not getting put out at all”. It was her way of saying she was done. It always seems to take longer and longer to get everything out and set up. She also laughed that she was getting forgetful because she had found several things that she had not remembered having. I can relate. I open up the Christmas storage boxes and am so excited when I …

Decorate Your Heart With God’s Light

Inside my house are the warm colors of Christmas. I love reds and golds and shiny lights. I enjoy the many angels I’ve collected along the way as well as the nativity scenes both large and small. I like the Scripture verses framed and carved into wood. We also have a wall of crosses that stay there all year long and in the middle of that wall is our family name, surrounded by the crosses. I would say our house is warm and cozy inside. Outside though it’s dark and gloomy and drippy. It’s not that welcoming. The outdoor Christmas …

Don’t Let Christmas Become a Cartoon

We watched an old Christmas cartoon with our grandkids the other night. It was a classic with Mickey, Pluto and the two chipmunks. The chipmunks were wreaking havoc with the Christmas tree and Pluto was doing his best to guard it. In the end Pluto was frustrated and just went after those two little trouble makers and the tree was completely wrecked! And Pluto was blamed for it all. Somebody wants to wreak havoc on your Christmas. There are situations going on that you feel you have no control over. Trouble is brewing and you’re trying to decide if you …

Don’t You Just Love Your Gift?

We hosted the Christmas party for a local motorcycle ministry one year. As part of the festivities everyone brought gifts to exchange. We played “dirty santa”. As each person opened a gift the next gift recipient could either pick a new gift or steal one from someone who’d already opened it. It got pretty funny as there was a lot of gift wrangling going on! The night ended with lots of laughter and fellowship. Everyone went away a winner, but not everyone kept their own gift. It was light-hearted fun though as no one got upset when their gift was stolen. …

Tis The Season To Remember the Reason

The first Christmas that Danny and I were dating he went home to see his dad and other family for Christmas. We had not known each other very long but oh how I missed him. I had already given him my heart. We’ve had over 40 Christmases together now. We still can’t think of another person we’d rather spend the holidays with than one another. Except for Jesus. For those of us who have given our hearts to Jesus we are like that. We can’t stand to be apart from our Lord. We’ve given Him everything and we have nowhere …

Thanksgiving!

As I wondered out loud to the Lord what I might have, if anything, for me to share about giving, He reminded me about a situation we encountered while on a motorcycle in Houston Texas. So here’s the story. Quite a few years ago I won a chance to compete in a shrimp eating contest in Houston. After entering my short message on “Why I am the best seafood lover in the south” they picked me! We decided that we didn’t want to fly we wanted to ride the motorcycle. In the middle of July no less, we did just …

Jesus is the Life Changer: Day 1

God Works From the Inside Out I remember as a teenager feeling the need to change clothes three or four times before a date. I remember stressing over hair that wouldn’t behave and makeup that wouldn’t straighten up. All this was a struggle for one who at the time felt that I wasn’t pretty enough, thin enough or short enough. My five foot ten inch body was great, but I didn’t know it. I was constantly hoping I would fit in to what the standards of the day were. One day Christ came into my heart. I was 26 years …
