Narrow Gate Of A New Year

It’s a new year. The other night as I was contemplating this new year I heard the words “narrow gate of a new year”. And I like that idea. The Narrow Gate in Scripture referred to Jesus as being the Only Way to salvation. But this morning the Lord refers to this new year as a narrow gate as well. It’s time to drop anything that held you back in 2021. Oh beloved, what held you back last year? What kept you from moving on in your life? What stopped you from fulfilling God’s purpose for your life? What caused …

Drive Home Gods Truth

The Amphicar comes to mind. Made in the 60’s it was both a highway driver and a boat. This boat car’s original price wasn’t that expensive, but they now have been known to sell at auction in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Oh beloved, why did God bring this strange vehicle to mind? Because He wants to “drive home” truth. You are worth more than you can imagine to Him. When He rebuilt you – being born again – He made you to navigate all circumstances of life. Neither you nor I are meant to be sunk by life’s …

Love Notes

Our refrigerator is covered with messages, photos and magnetic notes. Oh and there are some pieces of artwork as well. I love those reminders. Each one holds a special place in our hearts. Notes that vow that we are the best at something, anything, warm our hearts. Grandchildren who pledge undying devotion, share their grades, show their artistic abilities. There’s even a note from a daughter and her family on there. Oh beloved, are you keeping the good notes close at hand? When the world is tumbling you like you’re in a rock tumbler, are you able to remember that …

Steady As She Goes

God says I AM that I AM. I AM your Captain and I will navigate you safely to the yet unseen shore.   “Steady as she goes.” I hear these words as I get up this morning. So of course I look for the origin of the phrase and I find it quite interesting. Here is what I read: It is a instruction from the captain to the helmsman of a ship, to keep the ship heading steadily on the same course regardless of gusts of wind or cross-currents. And then I read these words: When in vicinity of the …

Out Of The Shallows

Not long ago I dreamed that we took visiting friends to the lake. When we arrived at the lodge we could see a bit of water that wasn’t very deep and lots of people swimming. They were not very impressed. “Is this all there is?” I told them the area we were at was just the tip of the iceberg. If they’d get out in the water and look beyond the swimming area, they’d see the expanse of the beautiful lake and be amazed. Oh beloved, truth is we often don’t go beyond the swimming area do we? We are …

Breaking Barriers

On this day headlines are something that really caught my eye this morning. The first from October 11, 1947 was about Chuck Yeager, who became the first person to pass the speed of sound while flying the experimental Bell X-1 plane at an altitude of about 43,000 feet, going 700 miles an hour. As kids we all heard planes making a sonic boom. Now you don’t get to hear about it anymore because noise abatement regulations halted supersonic flight (by civil aircraft) over U.S. land. Oh beloved, I hear the Lord speaking to my heart this morning. As believers are …

Searching The Headlines

The headline reads “After decades of searching Mark Twain’s signature was found inside a famous cave”. The authorities go on to declare that they are 99% sure it’s authentic. Imagine spending decades searching the walls of a cave. Not hieroglyphs or petroglyphs from thousands of years ago but a kid’s signature. Maybe. Oh beloved, what have you been searching for? For some of you it’s been indeed decades. Are you hoping that it will make a difference in your life – this thing you are searching for? God wants you to know this morning that He is the Searcher – …

Confidence Out of Mishaps

My mom had incredible confidence. Her entire life was a series of one mishap or another mixed with amazing and unprecedented blessings. I think her confidence arose from never focusing on the mishaps but rather showcasing the good things that came her way. She was industrious and worked into her 70’s. When she had cancer at the end of her life I asked God why. She didn’t. I wanted to know why the woman of faith I knew had to endure that mess after all her life endurance. She never questioned. She just kept going. Are you like me? You …

It’s Over?

Well another Christmas is “in the books”. It’s over. For better or worse there is nothing more we can do about it. I work hard to surprise Danny with at least one present he doesn’t know about and each year he just seems to know. LOL And everything that was opened was used and grateful kids ran down battery operated goodies quickly. All in all it was a success. But it’s over. Danny always reads a Scripture passage each year and this year was no exception. That meant a lot considering this year’s happenings. But two grandsons also wanted to …

Surrender

I have HUGE plans each year for Christmas. I also have a full time job, a full time home, husband and writing ministry as well as speaking opportunities. I am a grandmother too. I have great ideas, beautiful plans and wistful thinking. This tends to get me flustered to say the least. So a few days ago as I looked at the not quite decorated pump organ in our living room, I decided to surrender. Surrender all my Christmas ideals and walk into the peaceful season. I have a lot things decorated but if something doesn’t get done I will …

Bad Things and Good People

This week we will be having a family funeral. I’ve been processing this incident for several days. It’s been very hard. Danny’s precious cousin lost her life at the hands of someone masquerading as a friend. She walked into heaven, not as a special needs woman of 66 years, not as a beaten and battered victim, but as a completely whole woman of God. For that we are forever thankful. Her father, Danny’s Uncle, has been a minister of the Gospel for well more than 50 years. He has held hands with the dying, comforted the grieving and married and …

Helping or Trusting?

I am really good at helping my husband. Sometimes I go overboard. Case in point. He wanted a new/different hammer drill. So he had one picked out and was planning to go to Little Rock to get it. Well, I decided I could order one and get it to the house quicker than he could go get it in the store. I wanted to save time and save him some trouble. My motive was honorable. Only I didn’t order the right kind. I ordered one like he already had. “Don’t try to help me so much” was his reply. Thankfully …
