A friend’s post mentioned that her children are reading The Boxcar Children series of books. That really touched my heart because those were some of my favorite books when I was a child. And I was thrilled that there are still children who still love to read books. I looked up the author, Gertrude Chandler Warner, and find out that from the age of five, she dreamed of becoming an author. She wrote stories for her grandfather, and each Christmas she gave him one of these stories as a gift. Oh beloved, what gift are you dreaming of? What heart …
God Gives Evidence
We have enjoyed what has been a pretty mild summer so far. No temps over 100 degrees yet at all. I like that. I could do without the usual soaring thermometer readings altogether. But the weather people are saying this week is going to be tipping if not over 100. I’m glad that those in charge of weather reporting can warn us when a storm is brewing, when a hurricane is forming and when the temps will soar. We can be prepared at least somewhat. Or can we? Oh beloved, don’t hold your breath for everything you have heard to …
When You Believe and Know the Truth of God
When you believe and know the truth of God, it changes everything. I’m a worrier. There are times that trouble overwhelms me and fills my mind with grief. I used to let it consume me until I couldn’t take it anymore. The only way I got through and will get through these discouraging times, is God. Now when worry is looming, the first thing I do is ask God for help. It’s true, my friends. When you face uncertainty, trust God. He can handle anything that comes our way. 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the …
Ctrl-Alt-Del
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8 ESV) I am sure we can all agree that there is so much negativity going on in this world right now. Everywhere you turn, everywhere you read, it can be hard to escape and this morning especially as I felt the heaviness of the consequences of evil, I needed a word and a reminder on what to focus on during this …
Drive Home Gods Truth
The Amphicar comes to mind. Made in the 60’s it was both a highway driver and a boat. This boat car’s original price wasn’t that expensive, but they now have been known to sell at auction in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Oh beloved, why did God bring this strange vehicle to mind? Because He wants to “drive home” truth. You are worth more than you can imagine to Him. When He rebuilt you – being born again – He made you to navigate all circumstances of life. Neither you nor I are meant to be sunk by life’s …
Scam Proof Living
We got a call Sunday from a “census worker”. She said she was calling to confirm our address. Since it was a cell phone from northwest Arkansas and knowing I’d completed the census online months ago, I politely declined and hung up on her. It’s amazing the scams that are going around these days. Oh beloved, the enemy loves to scam people. He pretends to be in the know. He shares his knowledge with whoever will listen. Trouble is he is a lying liar. It’s his nature to lie, cheat and steal. His scams are the same types over and …
Jesus The Way, The Truth and The Life
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 This verse may be familiar to many of us. The phrase, “…the way and the truth and the life” may easily roll off our tongues, because we have heard it quoted many times. We may have committed it to memory if we grew up in Sunday School or Awana. We may be struck by the combination of these three descriptors: way, truth, life. These are an interesting combination. As we focus on the words individually, it prompts us to …
Out Of The Shallows
Not long ago I dreamed that we took visiting friends to the lake. When we arrived at the lodge we could see a bit of water that wasn’t very deep and lots of people swimming. They were not very impressed. “Is this all there is?” I told them the area we were at was just the tip of the iceberg. If they’d get out in the water and look beyond the swimming area, they’d see the expanse of the beautiful lake and be amazed. Oh beloved, truth is we often don’t go beyond the swimming area do we? We are …
Encounter Light in the Darkness
I woke up in the night and as I customarily do I took a look outside our bedroom window. It was so moonlit that everything was clearly seen. It was almost as bright a daylight. We had seen the moon rising as we came home earlier in the evening, but I had no idea just how bright and clear it would all be in the middle of the night. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t understand everything that I encounter in my life. Some things are especially hard to deal with. But as I focus on His light …
The Facts
Our Stella wanted a snake for Christmas! A python like she saw at the pet store a while back. That is, until she found out that pythons like to squeeze and eat animals whole. After that she decided no she wasn’t going to take that chance. Sometimes all we need are the facts. Oh beloved, you are so prized by the Lord. He gave his only begotten son for you. He knows what you want he knows your hearts desires. He understands. You want the very best Christmas ever. You want your life to work out well. There are some …
Truth Or Dare
Truth or dare we used to play a lot when we were kids. We’d have to make a choice whether to tell the truth about something or be dared to do something dangerous or crazy. I always chose to tell the truth but I have friends who might remember they chose climbing the roof at 10 pm instead of telling. It was all in good fun and back then we didn’t have many deep dark secrets to reveal anyway. The devil will dare you to believe his wild tales. He will try to convince you to confess you don’t believe …
Stand Firm
Danny’s first visit by a physical therapist involved a belt. It was so colorful. It reminded me of a belt Danny had in the 70’s. The therapist put it around Danny and then they stood up together. Huge victory! He was standing firm. I now find myself having to stand firm. And I realize that it’s in the big mountains of life where we learn to stand the most firmly. Oh beloved, this is no ordinary day. This is the day when you can stand firm in your faith. You can stand for righteousness. You can stand against evil. And …
