As I drink from one of our many coffee mugs this morning I see my now favorite cup. I picked it up and it had a ring of coffee dried inside it, so I chose one of our other ones. It says Happy Happy Happy. Somehow that word repeated three times makes me smile. I also smile that I gave Danny a gift cup this morning from many years ago – You Drive Me Wild.
Oh beloved, God is speaking to our hearts this morning. It’s time to discard the bitter cup you have been languishing over. It’s time to pick up a fresh clean cup this morning. You have lovely cups to drink from even when you don’t feel the good feelings.
Drink from the cup of salvation. Relish the truth that through Christ you are born again to a hope that will never perish. The cup of salvation is always clean, pure and holy. It’s yours as a gift given not of your own works but of the finished work of Christ.
Drink from the cup of joy. I need this cup because things aren’t always happy are they? As I talk with friends and loved ones who are going through hard things I cheer them with the Word of God. And in turn the Lord Himself wants to cheer us with His Word. Joy ingested is a deep river of flowing water that keeps your heart from the bitterness of hardship and sorrow.
Drink from the cup of blessing. Oh precious one, God gives blessings we may not even realize are blessings. Another day in His marvelous plan of grace. Another moment with a loved one. Another day to pursue the work your hands have to do. Another blessing of glory that you get to walk and live and breathe and share the Gospel with someone.
God loves you and He’s for you. Spend some time looking at all the cups of the Lord available for you. Not ones you bought yourself, but gifts from the Only Living God. Gifts from the Savior of the world and personally of you. And gifts from Holy Spirit who dwells inside of you to give you a new life and a new taste for the good cups of God. Don’t worry or fear another day. Instead drink in the Word, praise His name, and walk in the Light every day of your life!
Psalm 116: 13 I will take up the cup of salvation, And call upon the name of the LORD.
Psalm 16: 5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You have made my lot secure.
Isaiah 35: 10 Those who have been ransomed by the LORD will return. They will enter Jerusalem singing, crowned with everlasting joy. Sorrow and mourning will disappear, and they will be filled with joy and gladness.
Revelation 22: 17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life.
