A Repost from 2016 by Rebekah Beene to My Journey of Faith Magazine. Still current today.
For the past decade we’ve done a lot of travel in ministry. Almost every weekend for a while was spent either going to an event or home with family. Either way there wasn’t much time for upkeep of home or yard. Our one-acre place just didn’t get much attention. Now we have temporarily slowed down and have time to make assessments. There are things we need to work on that we just didn’t even have time to see! We’ve started repairs on the house and the yard. My husband mows the entire acre so he knows that the grass needs fertilizer and the weeds need to be gone! The storms that blew through during the winter left lots of debris, so he had to pick that up first. The house has some issues with repair here and there as well. Even on the inside we are now planning for new heat and air and flooring. Painting will be done as well. This all will require some time at home, especially since we both work.
It reminds me of the need in the walk of faith for renewal. We get so busy “doing” ministry that we often neglect our heart. God loves our service, but our devotion is what He’s after. If we work ourselves to death in the marketplace of Christianity but let our inner life go, we will find that we get worn out, tattered and lose some of our sparkle. Weeds of doubt and anxiety want to take over. Anxious work turns into grumpy service. Pretty soon things are falling down around us and we wonder what happened? This is the time to go home and get with God. Make room for Him to assess our situation for us and give us guidance on how to rebuild, repair, repent if necessary… and RENEW!
Oh beloved, God never says it’s too late to renew your walk with Him. His desire is to get you to the secret place of His presence and lift your heart and mind and spirit. You may feel you don’t have time to slow down, but you must choose to take time. Any time spent alone with the Lord is time well spent. It increases the value of your heart and increases the value of your service. Let Him renew things for you. Trust Him to revamp whatever He needs to in order to recreate a clean heart and right spirit within you.
God loves you and He’s for you! That’s worth letting Him do what only He can do as you return to His presence and get the makeover you always dreamed of. Renew is a most lovely word when applied to God’s love and care. Rejoice as He makes all things new for you!
Psalm 51: 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (New American Standard)
Zephaniah 3: 17 The LORD your God is with you. He is a hero who saves you. He happily rejoices over you, renews you with His love, and celebrates over you with shouts of joy. (God’s Word Translation)
