Two Travel to Bethlehem

Seeking a Room in Bethlehem by James Tissot

“And all went to be registered, each in his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David.” Luke 2:4

After Mary’s announcement, and perhaps some time to recover from her astonishment, she engaged in a long speech praising God. But this announcement had caused Mary some concerns. Can you imagine a young virgin perhaps about fourteen years of age, betrothed to be married, and learning she is pregnant and coping with her secret? But God used an angel to convince Joseph of Mary’s innocence.

Then Mary traveled with her espoused husband to the city of Bethlehem to be registered. I read that was about sixty-five miles, and would require four or five days to walk or travel on a donkey.  But when the weary couple arrived in Bethlehem, that city was teeming with people and no hotel rooms available; so the couple was given permission to spend that night in a stable within a cave with animals.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the fulfilled promise of a Savior. Though Mary was human as are we; thank You for her serving as the vessel through which Jesus would be born and provide redemption for Your sinful people. Since Jesus made salvation possible, we thank in His name. Amen.
