Valuable Lesson Found in the Thunder and Lightning

Day by Day Devotions

Job 37:4-5 “After it, a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice, And He does not restrain the lightnings when His voice is heard. “God thunders with His voice wondrously, doing great things which we cannot comprehend.”

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” John 8:12

Have you ever thought of all the different sounds thunder makes?  As I have gotten older I find myself listening more attentive to the things of God.  Thunder is no exception.   I have heard thunder sound as though it were miles and miles away, just a faint noise in the background of life.  I have heard thunder seem much closer and much more distinct.  I have heard thunder rumble both far and near.  Then I have heard the kind of thunder that makes the house shake and the rumble sound that sends cold chills down your spine.

I have heard the voice of God, in just the same ways.  He speaks in a still small voice and expects His children to listen and obey.  Sometimes that is all it takes, just like a small child when a parent instructs them to do something and they comply the first time.

There are other times it takes a little more persuasion for us to listen to God.  His voice gets a little louder and stronger to get our attention.  Things we call life gets in the way and keep us from responding to that gentle voice of God and He has no choice but to get bolder with his voice.

Then there is the most distinct voice of God, the voice that demands our attention.   There is no doubt about its authority when heard.  The voice one cannot run away from.  Nor can one hide from this voice.  I remember trying to cover up with quilts and pillows when the thunder was so loud but it did not help.  I could still hear and feel the shaking of the house.

God speaks to us all in a very distinct way, the way he knows will get our attention.  My prayer is that we all listen very attentively to the “Voice of God.”  Seek to know what God is saying to each of us as individuals.

Let us not forget lightning.  There cannot be thunder without lightning.  I don’t think it is a mistake that you must have lightning before you can hear the thunder.  Light is the root word of lightning.  Jesus is the light of the world.  We must have light in order to hear the voice of God.

There are different ways lightning presents itself.  The most prevalent is cloud to cloud, then ground to cloud, and cloud to ground.  The common theme is light or lightning.  There is an electric discharge between the atmosphere and an earthbound object.

What a beautiful picture.  There is only one way to be saved but not all have the same experience, just as there are different experiences with lightning and thunder.   However there is only one way to create thunder and that is with lightning which is symbolic of Jesus the Light of the World.

Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

My prayer is that we all listen and seek to really see what God has in store for our lives while traveling through this place called earth on our way to The Heaven of Heavens.  Also, if you have not accepted Jesus and your savior, please ask him to come into your life and become your Light.
