What Kind of Example Are You?

Not everyone has had the privilege of experiencing the many joys and frustrations of growing up with an older sibling. If you did, then you probably (at some point or another) were told to follow their example {or perhaps, not to}. Many younger siblings look up to their older brother/sister and want to be just like them, doing everything they do.

Some follow to a fault and end up walking on very slippery ground because of it; some see their older sibling succeeding and obtaining praise- thus choose to do the same things in order to succeed as well. While others see the problems older siblings are facing due to poor choices- and decide to learn from their mistakes and take a completely different road in life. Whether you were an only child or have already pegged what kind of sibling you were… the common thread comes down to this: EXAMPLE.

Being an example to someone doesn’t just hitch itself to brothers and sisters. Children can be examples to parents and vice versa… cousins and other family members… friends and acquaintances… colleagues and neighbors… all have direct influence on SOMEONE’S life- whether for better or worse.

Take a moment with me to be a bit introspective (take a serious look at yourself). Now, think about all the people that you come in contact with on a regular or semi-regular basis. OK- go through the list and see yourself AS each person… how would they see you based on the times you are around each other: Happy, Depressing, Hard-working, Lazy, A Show-Off, Humble, etc? Seriously, take a minute to think, I’ll wait…

Ready? Down the rabbit hole we go! What answer did you arrive at? Do these people see you in a positive or negative way the majority of the time? All of us have our bad days- but if the person you portray MOST of the time is not the person you want to be seen as, don’t you think something needs to be done?

People are watching… your children, siblings, spouse, co-workers, etc. All the people around you see what life you are living and how you act in EVERY situation. What kind of an example are you? Do you care enough to change?

“Only let us live up to what we have already attained. Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.  For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.  But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:16-21
