What’s Your Status With God? Are You ‘On Leave’?

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16: 9

I have worked for years in the role in Human Resources. Part of my job over the years has been to navigate employees through the process of taking different types of personal leave from work. Sometimes employees are eligible for FMLA, a leave where their job is protected for a certain number of weeks and guarantees they will have a position when they return from leave. Often times people are on medical leave for a surgery, having a baby, taking care of a loved one or a military leave. Regardless of their type of leave we must put into a system their status of ‘on leave.’

We have other facets of our lives where we feel the need to enter our status into a system. A quick scroll through any social media platform you will see the relationship status of your friends, family members as well as complete strangers. You can select many options such as single, in a relationship, engaged, married, divorced, widowed or even ‘it’s complicated’.

I had the thought recently, what if God puts us all into a system based upon our status. Makes me nervous to think what status’ he would have available to use. What status would you be right now? Would you be ‘on leave’ where you believe in God, love him but have put your walk with him ‘on hold’ because you have too many other things going on. Maybe your leave would be ‘active duty.’ You are in the trenches of Christianity by serving consistently in church, tithing regularly, serving in the children’s rooms for Sunday school, loving your neighbors, giving them your other cheek after they strike your first, being a godly example to your kids and being an evangelistic disciple at every corner you turn.

Or, have you been terminated? Taken off the books completely? You had a faithful walk and relationship with your heavenly father until you were in the position of grieving the very soul you loved the most. When everything fell apart in your life you shouted out your hatred for God turning your back and taking hands to walk with the enemy.

Oh brother or sister in Christ, God never has your status set on anything other than His loving perfect child. No matter the path you are on, no matter what you have personally set your status to be with Him, He sees you, loves you and is awaiting your return from ‘it’s complicated’ to ‘in a relationship.’

He is there as we are barely hanging on. He is still loving us unconditionally, navigating our lives, holding the reigns, waiting for us to open our compass that makes our journey right again to focus on living for Him in the status of active duty. I’m glad that no matter my walk, I can always have the status of ‘in a relationship’ because God loves me unconditionally.
