The Vision of Zacharias by James Tissot

Scripture: Luke 1: 5-7  “In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah, and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. And they both were righteous before God, walking in all His commandments and statues of the Lord. But they had no child: because Elizabeth was barren and both advanced in age.”

Once while Zacharias’ division was on duty and he was serving, he was chosen by lot to burn incense, and many were praying outside. There appeared an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense and told Zacharias not to be afraid: for his prayer was answered and his wife Elizabeth will bear a son and he is to call him John.

He also said he was to be great before the Lord, must not drink wine or strong drink and he’d be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb. He will go before the Son of God and turn many of the children to the Lord of Israel.

Zacharias asked the angel how he could be sure of this because he is an old man and his wife advanced in years. Because he doubted he would not be able to speak until these things took place.

Prayer thought: Elizabeth did become pregnant, gave birth to John the Baptist, and proves nothing is too difficult for God to accomplish. We thank and praise You in Jesus’ name. Amen.
