Light Under A Basket

Matthew 5:15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lamp stand, and it gives light for all who are in the house.

I learned a song as a child that I still remember to this day. “This Little Light of Mine”.  You probably know this song too.  It speaks a very simple truth.  A light will not shine so others can see when its hidden away.

This song also holds the truth of the following passage:

Luke 8:16  “No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a basket or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lamp stand so that those who come in may see its light.

So what is our take away from these verses and this song.  We are talking about salvation in Jesus.  If we do not boldly shine in the presence of others (sharing Jesus) but hid our light under cover (keep silent), the flame will not be seen.  Shining your light means growing your faith, sharing your story of what Jesus has done in your life, worshiping and praising the Lord, and serving and encouraging others. Not only will your light shine brighter and bolder but you will find that He gives you more light in the company of others whose lights are shining (fellowship).

Don’t let the light of your salvation experience and excitement fade and dwindle to the low light of complacency.  What can you do?  During these times you should examine your story and see where Jesus has brought you through a difficult time or when you knew He was present in the circumstances. It is also a time to set aside a quiet time to be alone with Jesus.  Pray, read your Bible and listen with your heart to what He is telling you.

As a Christian, why are you hiding the light of Jesus by keeping it covered or hidden from those around us. Be reminded that Jesus is the light of the world.  He said that no one comes to the Father except through Him. Rejoice in your salvation!

John 8: 12  Then Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows Me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

And just in case you forgot the tune and lyrics, listen to this!

Let you Light shine for Jesus!!
